Mono Ethylene Glycol Properties :

Mono ethylene glycol is a syrupy , odorless , and colorless liquid. Moreover, it is miscible with water ,alcohols, and aldehydes. Its chemical formulation is C2-H6-O2 or HOCH2CH2OH or CH0OHCH2OH and it has a sweet taste . The commercial name of this compound is MEG. The melting point is -12.9℃ and the boiling point is 197℃. MEG is a necessary raw material for many industrial applications for example , as antifreeze in car engines. That is to say ,the most widely used chemical from the Glycol family is Mono ethylene glycol .

Production Methods :

Hydrolysis of EO ( ethylene oxide) results in Mono ethylene glycol production .In fact, Ethylene oxide is an intermediate. Ethylene oxide reacts with water .The reaction is in the presence of either acids or bases as catalysts .Although it can happen at natural pH , the best production is at acidic pH .In this method diethylene glycol (DEG) , triethylene glycol(TEG) , and oligomers diethylene glycol are the main byproducts. In order to obtain MEG most in demand with a considerable yield,large exess of water should be supplied to reduce the successive reaction. The chemical reaction is as below:

Applications of Mono Ethylene Glycol:

This is a necessary ingredient for the production of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) resins . In fact, PET is the most common thermoplastic polymer resin . PET is used in fibres for clothing , bottles for liquids , and in combination with glass fibre for engineering resins.Therefore, monoethylene glycol is an integral commodity in PETindustry.

Another important application of this compound is in engine coolants . Coolant is a liquid which controls extreme increase of temperature inside the engine. In automobile industry, they use antifreeze products. This is because they prevent heat transfer fluids from freezing. Propylene glycol is another coolant . However, MEG is more preferable due to its more reasonable price.

One of the other significant applications of Mono ethylene glycol is in fabric industry. It is an essential raw material for Polyester. It reacts with PTA to produce Polyester.

If MEG is swallowed , rinse the mouth thoroughly but do not induce vomiting. Get medical aid immediately.

If there is skin contact, remove the person from source of contamination and seek medical aid.
